I was contacted on my messenger by a person from Africa who claims to be an attorney. He says that I can claim an inheritance and will send me proof of what he says once I have emailed him a reply to his email. Of course, I am suspicious and pretty certain it's a scam. However, I would like to know if I send him an email, will that give him any computer info that he could use against me? Would that give up my IP address or something else that he could use against my PC?

well, your ip address is embedded in EVERY email you send.
but nigerian scammers don't tend to have much in the way of intelligence, all that happens when they realise you're winding them up and not playing the game is that they stop talking to you. meh.
depending on how bored you are you can make them jump through hoops, diss their mommas, pretty much anything since their grasp of the english language is so poor and their minds are on one thing and one thing only.
but yeah, it's a scam - they're just trying to convince you to hand over your bank details so they can empty your account.

its safe
May be,take care.
The only thing that replying will do is confirm that the address you hold is valid. The spam is sent out and the spammers don't know if the addresses are valid or not the instant you reply...even if it is to say F O you've told them that your address is valid and they can spam you more and sell your valid address to other spammers.
Its a scam all right. Take a look at http://www.419eater.com and read a few of the letters.
All you gave them was your email address which will probably now be even more flooded with spam than it was before.
