What's the best free internet security programme?

I got Mcafee free for a year with my ISP but the year is nearly up, and am looking to get my computer protected with some free stuff. Any suggestions of good programmes and where to download them will be most appreciated

free active antispyware scans i would have to recommend windows defender

there r only 3 free active AS app's i know of

windows defender,spyware doctor and spyware terminator

spyware doctor free version has 40,000 less definitions in its database tahn the paid version so i can't recommend it

spyware terminator has low detection rates is a royal pain to uninstall and takes up just as much resources as the otherstake up resources like the others and most people bash it becaue its from microsoft but it does its job

it says its a paid product but thats only if u want the active scan
